Students, faculty, and staff of the University of Pittsburgh can take advantage of a number of
computing services from Computing and Information Services (CIS) including remote software
access via application serving, timesharing services, dial-up access, and the public computing
labs. Some of the components of these services include:
Software Application and Print Servers Service (includes Pittsburgh and Regional Campus
Ubiquitous Network Access): 14 Hewlett-Packard Pentium-based Application Servers, each
with 128 megabytes of main memory, 4 to 8 gigabytes of on-line disk storage, and running the
NetWare version 4.1 operating system. 4 Sun SPARCstation Application Servers, each with 64
megabytes of main memory, 4 gigabytes of on-line disk storage running SunOS version 4.1.3.
Sun UNIX Timesharing Service: 8 Sun SPARCstation 10 processors, each with 128
megabytes of main memory, 81 gigabytes of on-line disk storage, SunOS version 4.1.3 operating
system.
VMS Timesharing Service: 2 Alpha 3000 processors (RISC), 1 VAX 6420 processor, 1.4
gigabytes of main memory, 62.5 gigabytes of on-line disk storage, 3 nine-track magnetic tape
drives (1,600 and 6,250 bpi), 5 cartridge tape drives, VMS version 6.1 operating system.
IBM 3090-400J: 1 IBM 3090-400J processor, 256 megabytes of main memory, 256 megabytes
of expanded memory, 180 gigabytes of on-line disk storage, 1 Xerox 4090 laser printer, 2 Xerox
4850 color laser printers, 1 2,800 lpm printer, 768 HYDRA protocol converter ports, 2 nine-track
magnetic tape drives (1,600 and 6,250 bpi), 8 cartridge tape drives, MVS/ESA version 4.3
operating system.
Computing Labs
Listed below are the seven CIS public computing lab facilities available at the Pittsburgh
Campus:
1077 Benedum Hall G-27/G-62 Cathedral of Learning 1E01 Forbes Quadrangle Hillman Library Research Lab 230 Lawrence Hall C114 Sutherland Hall Technology Evaluation and Consulting
(TEC) Lab, B-3 Engineering Hall In addition to the seven public computing labs, CIS also supports the Adaptive Computing
Training Lab, which is part of the Learning Skills Center. Adaptive Computing Training Lab Note: Enlarged-print software is available for low-vision students on all DOS/Windows PCs in
the CIS public computing labs. Voice recognition software for the blind including a voice
interpreted interface to Microsoft Windows is also accessible on all computing lab
DOS/Windows PCs. All computing labs with Macintosh PCs feature facilities for file
conversion.
